The problem of minimizing the power consumption of an induction motor (IM) operating from a
frequency converter in vector control mode is considered. This contribution presents an application of a nonlinear gradient-based model predictive control (GRAMPC) scheme for induction motors to provide the desired rotor flux in an energy efficient way over a wide operational range. The method has
the same formulation as for the optimization of power in the steady-state conditions of operation as well as the reduction of the peak power losses under step change in the load torque on the shaft of the motor.
Simulation results show the robustness and performance of the control scheme.
